Planning beyond an extraction
After a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone and soft tissue can change during healing. Site-preservation procedures may be discussed when maintaining the area could support a future restorative plan.
Individual considerations
The decision depends on the reason for extraction, infection or damage, tissue condition, anatomy, health and healing factors, and whether an implant or another replacement is being considered.
Procedure and healing
The site may be cleaned and grafting material placed when appropriate. Materials, closure, healing instructions, risks, alternatives, and responsibility for future treatment should be explained before care. Site preservation does not guarantee that no additional grafting will be needed later.
