Professional fluoride and dental sealants are different preventive measures. Fluoride may be recommended to help strengthen teeth based on decay risk, while sealants cover selected grooves and pits that can be difficult to clean.
Who may benefit
Recommendations depend on age, tooth development, previous decay, dry mouth, diet, oral hygiene, medications, orthodontic appliances, and other individual factors. These treatments are not a replacement for brushing, cleaning between teeth, or dental examinations.
What treatment involves
Fluoride may be applied as a varnish, gel, or another professional product. Sealants require cleaning and preparing a suitable tooth before the material is placed and checked. Sealants should be monitored because they can wear or need repair.
