Porcelain veneers cover the visible surface of selected teeth and may be considered for certain concerns involving color, shape, spacing, wear, or proportion. Healthy supporting teeth and gums are important to planning.

Evaluation considers the condition of the teeth, bite, existing restorations, habits such as grinding, and the amount of change requested. Veneers commonly require alteration of tooth structure and should not be described as universally reversible.
Alternatives and maintenance
Depending on the goal, alternatives may include whitening, bonding, orthodontic treatment, restorative care, or no treatment. Veneers require ongoing cleaning and monitoring and can chip, fracture, loosen, or eventually need replacement.
