Rebuilding selected supporting tissues
Grafting procedures may be considered when gum tissue or supporting bone is insufficient for health, protection, or a planned restoration. Gum and bone grafts address different conditions and use different techniques.
Evaluation and planning
Planning considers the location and extent of the deficiency, its cause, oral hygiene, gum health, anatomy, health history, medications, tobacco use, and the intended treatment outcome. Imaging may be needed for bone-related planning.
Materials, healing, and referral
Grafting materials and techniques vary. The clinician should explain the proposed source or material, expected healing, limitations, alternatives, and signs that require attention. Some cases may require referral or coordinated specialist care.
