TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder)

Evaluation of jaw-joint and muscle symptoms that may affect comfort, movement, or function.

Jaw symptoms have different causes

TMD is a broad term for conditions affecting the jaw joints, chewing muscles, or related structures. Symptoms may include pain, limited movement, clicking, changes in bite, headaches, or discomfort with chewing, but these symptoms can have other causes.

Evaluation

An assessment may include the history and pattern of symptoms, jaw movement, muscle and joint examination, bite, dental condition, and imaging when indicated. Referral may be appropriate when symptoms or findings require additional evaluation.

Management depends on the diagnosis

Conservative measures, habit awareness, physical therapy, medication guidance from an appropriate clinician, or an oral appliance may be discussed. No appliance or treatment is suitable for every person, and irreversible bite changes should not be undertaken without careful diagnosis.
